Carbon Steel Details

Most types of steel have a very low carbon content amounting to 0.05 to 0.3% while carbon steel has a carbon content up to 2.5%.

Carbon steel is a low-cost, versatile material used in nearly every industry worldwide for applications ranging from construction to appliances. Steel’s malleability and ductility allow it to be easily shaped and formed into various configurations, including sheets, carbon steel tubing, carbon steel bar, carbon steel pipe, and structural shapes.

Although 2.5% might not sound significant, it produces advantages not found in other types of steel. For instance, carbon steel is stronger than traditional types of steel. This is why carbon steel is a top choice for producing knives, automotive components, tools, railways, and much more.

However, despite it's great strength capabilities, Carbon steel is much more prone to rust and corrosion than other types of steel. It’s also more difficult to work with.

Carbon steel is offered in three categories: Low, Medium, and High Carbon.

Low Carbon Steel

Is easy to work with and cost-effective. It can easily be machined and welded.  It's ideal for applications that don't require resistance or strength. Typically used in Food Cans, Car Parts, and Light Structural Support.

Medium Carbon Steel

Medium Carbon Steel offers more strength, but is slightly more difficult to weld and machine. Typically used in castings, gears, rail parts, and applications where pressure support is needed.

High Carbon Steel

High Carbon Steel is the most difficult steel to work with, although it is more durable than the other greats. Great to use in applications that don't require a lot of machining or forming, but strength is necessary. Typically used in knives, and tooling.
